Well I have one more day off before I go back for my dreaded 5-day stretch. I’m not looking forward to it mostly because I have a huge presentation to prepare before I head to New Orleans. It will be a fun trip but I have a lot of work to do while I am there.

Just before I left work yesterday I was catching up on the news. And I recalled that I was never a “reader” growing up. I like to read now, mostly the news, but I will also read the occasional novel or self-help book. I never did like reading when I was younger. In fact, I can honestly say that I had never read an entire book until my third year in college. It was English Composition class, and I read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. I remember in elementary school I would pick sentences out of each chapter and write them down for my book reports. I hated reading then. And I think that does me a disservice now because I am a slow reader and I have trouble concentrating and/or comprehending what I read now. It is a real task for me to think critically when I read. And that really bugs me.

The reason I bring this up is because my daughter who is only 11 months old is growing so fast. She is slightly mobile, in that, she can crawl (more or less scoot than crawl, but it is still very effective) and cruise along the walls and sofa. There are few things that can capture her attention for longer than 10 minutes. It has been very evident for the past couple of months though that there is one thing that keeps her crawling back. She loves her books. And by love, I mean, she L-O-V-E loves her books. She does the cutest things too. She’ll crawl into her room, and pull nearly every book off her shelf so that she is surrounded by a sea of books. She sit there with her chunky legs spread apart and she’ll have one hardback propped up-side-down and open. And she’ll turn the pages and look at the pictures. And about every fifteen minutes or so she will turn around just to make sure we are still watching her. It is so funny.

Now I know that she is only 11 months old and she doesn’t know what the words say, but it is really refreshing to see her like books so much. I nearly detested them when I was young, and to see her like them makes me feel really good. I hope that this isn’t just a phase that she will grow out of, after all, she has outgrown all of her toys but she always goes back to the books. I try to read to her at least a half hour every day, sometimes we will read for an hour. Usually when we read a lot, it’s because I spend a half hour reading her books and then I read the news out loud to her so that I can get my reading in for the day. This will be something that I try to instill in her since it wasn’t something that I was necessarily “forced” to do when I was younger. I think reading is so important, and I hope she does too.

Creed concert hangover

My wife decided to surprise me with a special trip. I had no idea what the trip was but I trusted her. She kept dropping hints and I thought for sure we were going to the Colts Training Camp in Anderson, Indiana. She said things like, “I hope it doesn’t rain because it is an outdoor event,” or “you’re going to have to wear a certain shirt to this event.” These things led me to believe that we were going to the Training Camp. Anyway, to make a short story long, we ended up going to the Creed concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center (formerly known as Deer Creek). Theft and Skillet opened for Creed. We only saw Skillet and they were pretty good. I tell you what though the Creed show was wicked awesome.

I haven’t been out a lot since my wife and I had our daughter, Emma. So when we go out we like to make it worth our while. As we walked to the gate at Verizon, we chuggd three beers each because we weren’t going to pay $10 for a freaking can of beer. That started a terrible snow ball effect. I had three more beers after that. I don’t remember the last time I was that enebriated, but I had a lot of fun.

We made it home alright, and Bri’s mom was watching Emma for us. Bri told me to be cool but I didn’t think that I could. So Bri went in to the house before me to give her mom a heads up about my “condition.” I stumbled in and went straight to my bedroom. I crashed on the floor. I remember the two of them peering around the corner, looking at me like I am a side show or something.

So I ended up sleeping on the floor in the living room because I didn’t want to stink up the bed. I was drenched in sweat, and beer and whatever else I may have sat in at the concert. I woke up at 7 am and made it to work by a little after 8. I was a little late but my boss was off on the weekends so I wasn’t worried. I had a terrible hangover. It was the worst hangover I had had since Easter of 2006. It was shockingly terrible. It is now 5:39pm and my head still hurts. So I got to work and I told my coworker about the situation. He was very understanding and cool about it. We weren’t very busy today but he took all the calls for me. He told me that I needed to drink some water and/or get something to eat. I didn’t think that my body could handle food so I decided on a cup of water. I slowly sipped it down. And as soon as I finished I felt brimming on the back of my throat. I didn’t want to ralph in front of him so I ran into the other room to unleash the fury going on in my stomach. I let loose into the trash can. That was all that had come out was the water I had previously drank. It was still cold. It was actually kind of refreshing. The cool sensation rushing through my sinus cavity was very distinguishable. It was as pleasant as a puking could be.

Anyhoo. It is now late in the afternoon and I feel good enough to type this post, but you won’t see me running a marathon after I get off work. I am done for the evening. In fact, I was done for the evening when I woke up this morning. I have True Blood to look forward to tonight. It isn’t my favorite show on TV but I like the fact that I and my wife share this moment together every Sunday. It is nice to know that during that hour ever Sunday we will have it together…watching vampires bang each other and fang each other. Anyway, my wife is the best person in the entire world. She is my best friend and she does great things for me that I don’t even deserve. I love you!!

Work Sucks

Alright. Today’s snowball started rolling last night for me. I started renovating my master bathroom last night. It started off okay until I painted the walls. The color was an aweful mint color that didn’t turn out like I thought it would. Plus, I removed the flooring and it was glued linoleum. It is an absolute nightmare to get it up off the subfloor. So I barely got any sleep last night because all I could think about was the bathroom and the stupid song stuck in my head all day. I woke up at 6 am with a splitting headache, apparently from all the fumes from the bathroom paint. My ankles were sore and I have to go to my crummy job.

Well, I work for a government agency and as a regulatory agent with a touch of law enforcement. Meaning I do mostly regulatory violations but every once in a great while I get to flex my strong arm of the law. We get a call that a patron at this facility that I work at was being cut off from alcohol, and that they were not planning on leaving the premises without handcuffs. Great! We get out to the scene and the facility tells the patron that they are no longer welcome on the premises. Suddenly the patron sobers up and decides to leave of their own accord. So far so good. Well the patron starts lolly-gagging around, talking to patrons, tying their shoe laces, etc. on their way to the door. I stopped and told the patron and I quote, “It is time to leave now.” At that point my partner says, “Don’t talk to the patron,” as if I am a little kid. He said that I was just prodding the patron, pushing their buttons.

I am just really frustrated and at this point I am just letting off some steam. I think that people who are breaking the law, by becoming overly intoxicated in public and disturbing other people trying to have a good time at this establishment, shouldn’t be handled with kid gloves. It is one thing to be piss-drunk and keeping to yourself. It is another thing to disturb everyone around you. And I am sorry if I upset someone who should have gone to jail but I gave a break and allowed their sister to take them home. I can only give so many times before I lose my authority. There are instances when being sensitive are appropriate but I am not going to allow someone to walk all over me. When it is time to leave, it is time to leave. End of story.
